Marathon Sports Super Sunday 5K/10K
Woke up with as many as 2000+ runners on a frigid February morning, to take part in my first 10K Super Sunday benefiting Lance Armstrong Cancer foundation.  Having completed 2 laps of this flat/fast run, can only be cataloged as different experience; running for a cure, hope for the ones battling with cancer, and for those who were amongst us !  It was a great experience and worthy run in my views, will be looking forward to this run next year.

Great Races, Incredible PlacesGreat Races, Incredible PlacesI went to Borders to look for something outside the ordinary palate, and found myself consumed by a few books.  One in particular being fairly new to running, was an adventure guide for running by Kimi Puntillo titled ‘Great Races, Incredible Places’. The title was compelling enough for me to page through, absorb, and get excited about a few of the races covered with context by the author.  In particular Antartica Marathon, Mount Kilimanjaro Marathon, Siberian Ice Marathon(in my maternal homeland), Everest Marathon, and the International Marathon of Marrakech (in my paternal homeland); as I look-forward to some of these races which have been on my mind for a short period of time.  I am glad to have stumbled on this book, it will surely occupy my mind when not running.

Eating healthy & only when you really need it!Kopali Organics

Nutrition is a vital part of recovery and replenishment after any punishing exercise being circuits at the gym or after a ten (10) mile run.  In my own experience training for the Boston Marathon, giving up certain food groups all together and making modifications to other with a stringent portion control.  You make even ask, since when do guys really care about their caloric intake !?  Well the answer is simple, for Boston my diet has tremendously changed in favor for leaner meats (poultry) for red meat, alcoholic beverages are off the table, vegetables and fruits satisfy those cravings, and tea for coffee. (no sugar please!) Opting should be the first thought in mind, when presented with options i.e. (if you plan to have some chocolate opt for Organic or Cocoa nibs, you’ll satisfy the craving with just a few of these)  My personal choice is Kopali Organics give it a try !

Row your best, and always !!!Erg Concept 2

I enjoy rowing as part of my training for the Boston Marathon, it’s an all body workout with no impact - granted you know the proper technique. Any gym would have one (1) or two (2) concept 1’s or 2’s somewhere hidden in a corner, but having had rowed in college my frosh year it’s clear not everyone approaches these machines with grace.  Instead someone would jump, crank the damper to ten (10) and stroke away with no context to release, recovery, catch, drive or finish.  It’s important to note many of these individuals apply incorrect breakdown at driving the oar from the catch all the way to the recovery position using either (legs), (back), and (arms), instead rowing from the catch to the recovery is one fluid motion that all parts are working together (not in isolation). My advice is use your (legs) to generate power from the catch, and not your (back), (arms) are the factor in the equation.  While on the erg (indoors) emulate the proper format, and pace yourself for the feather or else your not rowing.

Finally got it in the mail ! (My Garmin 310XT w/HRM)Garmin 310XT

I was relying heavily on my BlackBerry Tour 9630 too much, with an application by Brierwood Design Co-operative (a.k.a RoadRunnerGPS) to capture my runs and listen to Pandora radio.  This combination proved to be unsuccessful in terms of several instances, where my data was lost due to battery life of the Tour and RoadRunnerGPS software which is still in it’s early days.  Having had to endure the several instances, my mind was set to buy the Garmin for several reasons: 1) Being able to follow progress, and 2) the ability to take the watch from one workout to another effortlessly 3) is a big one for me and that is integration.  My runs are tracked and integrated into a dashboard which paints the picture by time, elevation, heart rate, and other useful metrics.  The Garmin Connect hub is yet another powerful that enables integration, research and social aspects of making running, biking, or swimming a winning combination.

Sea Shore 9.01 Mile Run (14.50 Km)

I was feeling sick, but the urge to go for a run was greater !  On the other hand the weather on this Saturday 16th, 2010 was perfect to make the typical summer walk on the beach a run instead.  Running in frigid temperatures is culprit during those long-runs and keeping warm at a moderate pace, become an additional element of risk to monitor to avoid hypothermia.  Glad today isn’t one of those days, where pushups in between traffic lights is required.

New Blog! Research Driven

I have been blogging since 2006!  But with the New Year ‘09 the decision to forgo my previous rants and focus in writing eloquent, coherent and opinionated research related articles was due to my return to graduate school. One of my aspirations for this blog is remain as open and transparent as possible into my research ideas, the process, and challenges during the research and discovery process.  It is my intention to share excerpts and ideas spanning the following domains/disciplines: Computer Science, Cognitive Science & Psychology, Artificial Intelligence, Foreign Languages, Language Modeling, Machine Learning Algorithms, and Computational Lexicography. It will be a long, laborious and eye-opening journey, but the hard work will indeed be fruitful and engaging experience. All referenced sources will be cited, and research papers will be made available upon completion.  I look forward to interact and work with others and your comments, reactions in the process. All the best,-Samir
